I’m a slut. Or at least that’s what everyone calls me. I guess that’s what you get when everyone thinks you’ve slept with the whole football team and then some.

My junior year of high school I gave my heart to Corey Winchester. He was handsome, cocky, and a pure gentlemen. Then everything changed in an instant. When I found out he was spreading malicious rumors about me, after I refused to sleep with him I was utterly surprised. To add to it, he broke up with me in front of the whole school. I essentially became the laughing stock of the town. People that I once called my friends became my enemies. Finding a way to ruin my life one day at a time.

Now the shitty part is I should have known a pretty boy like him was too good to be true. After ruining my reputation and life I did everything I could to stay under the radar, but it just wasn’t enough. I slowly learned that all the torment, and hate was all for one thing. Revenge. That’s what Corey wanted, and why I didn’t know. Then Rex Winchester came along. Corey’s cousin, and someone I knew I shouldn’t be getting close with. A whole six feet of hotness, a smile that melted the panties off of every girl in a fifty mile radius, and a heart of gold. He could have anyone he wanted, so why he chose me Corey’s ex, the bullied, slutty girl was beyond me. All I knew was that I wanted him. I wanted him more than anything. The problem was, I couldn’t tell if Rex, was just like Corey or if his intentions were as innocent as he was making them out to be.

My names Jenna Haines, and this is the story of how the one thing I wanted.. turned out to be the one thing that would hurt me the most. What happens when the one thing you least expect to happen, does? When all the lies and secrets come out. Well you’re about find out.

Our eyes met from across the table. His looking as if they were asking for more, answers. He looked curious, and I wasn’t looking for curious. “Yeah mine too. Let’s go get a shake. FFA still does that shake Friday thing right?” I asked. I could really go for a mint chocolate-chip shake right about now. We got up to dump our trays, but before I could move out of my seat an arm snaked around my shoulder pushing me back down. I turned all but growling as I realized the arm belonged to the mongrel Corey. “Remove your fucking arm from my body before I show you what it’s like to have your balls stuffed up your ass.” He smiled, a big toothy grin, dimples and all that use to have me melting in his hands, now I just wanted to puke all over his face. Distress singles were going off like crazy in my head.

“Tsk, tsk, is that anyway to talk to me Jenna?” He said his arm very much still around me. I was about to lose my shit. “Move on asshole, no one cares what you have to say.” Mimi yelled.

He tilted his head at her as if trying to find her one weakness. The best thing about Mimi was anything that he said to her she would brush off. I however wouldn’t.

“Hmm. Why don’t you stop worrying about me, and put your tits back in your shirt. That is unless you’re joining the slut club that Jenna here is the president of?” Mimi smiled, leaning across the table, giving him a huge eyeful of her cleavage. “I think your lost buddy, president of the slut club is Marie Jameson.” She replied in a sultry tone pointing to the end of the table.

“But in case you can’t find her let me draw you a map with some crayons, you go past leave us the fuck alone, turn right at fuck off, and oh look you’re in slut country.” His eyes dilated, and I couldn’t hold my laughter in. Mimi always knew how to tell someone to fuck off.

I pushed his arm off of me, catching a smirk on Rex’s face at the end of the table, knowing he had probably heard the whole conversation.

Corey gazed at me, following my line of vision to Rex. As soon as I seen I was caught I dropped my eyes down to my tray. The last thing I needed was Corey having yet another thing to use against me. His face leaned into mine, I could feel his hot breath on my cheek. The last time we were in a position like this was the very last time he kissed me. It was the last time, he ever treated me like anything other than a door mat.

“I won’t warn you off, because you know what I’m capable of Jenna. But if you think you have a chance with Rex you’re more than fucking wrong. Don’t cross me, you know as much as I do you don’t fit in with that crowd. I mean look at us, how well did that work out. If you think I make your life hard now, lets just say it can get ten times harder.” He whispered in my ear, wrapping a small strand of my hair around his finger before standing.

“Also you might want to start fighting your own battles. Oh and nice tits Mimi.” He said loudly well smirking. My heart was racing, as he walked away. An encounter like that never happened before. School had been in session only a week and I knew that he would more than live up to his word on hurting me.

“What a fucking douche-asshat-fucking-cumsucker” Mimi said under her breath as he walked away. I couldn’t agree more, but I wasn’t going to keep retaliating against him. One he wasn’t worth it really, and two I would be out of here in nine short months. If I could just manage to get through it.

Mimi reached across the table and grabbed my hand, pushing me from my thoughts. “Don’t let his false threats get to you. He will get what’s coming to him, he will pay for what he’s done to you. Maybe not today, or tomorrow but someday. I swear to it Jenna.” She said sincerely.

“You know I love you right. If I was into girls I would totally choose you as my girlfriend. No homo of course.” She giggled. “Sorry love, but I’m very much into dick. Like a lot.” I laughed back. This was true friendship right here. Now to get through the rest of the day without another encounter from either of the Winchester boys.

Synopsis

Rose Burton yearns to cut a strangling parental leash. After being diagnosed with diabetes, she hashes out a plan to graduate early so she can attend the University of Tennessee with the love of her life, Marcus Vega.

Marcus is a young man from the wrong side of the creek. After beating his addiction, he devotes himself to becoming a physician and earning the right to love Rose Burton. But devotion can’t erase the past. When he’s accused of being involved in a gang shooting, he risks everything to prove his innocence and protect the ones he loves.

Excerpt
Marcus
pulled down the long, winding, tree-covered driveway to the colonial-style
brick house. His 1979 Camaro sputtered and clanked to a stop on the pavers of
the half-circle drive at the front of the house, making him cringe.
“Thanks for a lovely picnic.”
Rose smiled, her bright-white teeth a contrast to her shiny, plump lips and
strawberry-blond hair.
He slid the gearshift
into park and rested his arm on the
back of her seat. “The pleasure was all mine.”
She playfully smacked
his shoulder then sagged into his chest, kissing him. The smell of fresh lilacs
filled his senses and he slid his hand down the back of her soft dress, raking
his fingers down the zipper.
With a sigh, she sat
back in her seat. “I’ll miss you tonight.”
“I’ll miss you, too. Text
me later.”
Rose’s eyes glistened
with mischief. “I’ll let you know when I finish. Then you can sneak over and
climb that trellis to my bedroom.”
Marcus tilted his head.
“Yeah, that’ll go over well. Your father would not only kill me, he’d hack me
to pieces and feed me to large coyotes in the middle of the woods so there
wouldn’t be any evidence.” He clutched the back of her neck and nudged her to
him. “But he’s not home right now.”
“Actually, he is.” It
wasn’t her sweet whispers that provoked the terror that flashed through him. It
was the meaning of her words.
He shot up and looked
straight ahead. There, on the front steps, stood Mr. Burton staring down at
them, arms crossed, brow furrowed.
“Guess I better go. I’m
totally busted.” She winked and stole a quick kiss. “It was worth it, though.”
Rose jumped out of the car and, with her head bowed, ran past her father.
He didn’t spare her a
glance, just marched toward Marcus.
Marcus gripped the
gearshift and contemplated tearing out of there, but if there was one thing
he’d never be, it was a coward. If Mr. Burton wanted to have words, he’d have
them. He shoved the car door open and stood eye-to-eye with the man.
Mr. Burton’s hair had
grayed around the temple, and his body had softened, but the man still commanded
respect. “We need to talk.” He scanned Marcus then the car. “My daughter wasn’t
supposed to be out with you today. Did you know that?”
Marcus refused to show
his anger at the man’s mocking tone. “Yes, I’m aware. Rose told me.”
“Yet, you took her to God-knows-where
anyway? You need to listen to me and stay away from my daughter.”
“Or what?” Marcus
regretted his words, but this man always brought out the worst in him. “Are you
going to have my dad fired? Oh wait, you already did that.”
“Your father’s a drunk
and I can’t have a man I can’t trust running operations in one of my
companies.”
Marcus shoved his hands
in his front pockets to hide his clenched fists. “Maybe so, but I’m not my
father and you can’t have me fired. You already tried, remember?”
“How you have so many
people in this town convinced you’re not the reject addict we both know you to
be, I’m not sure, but—”
“Listen, Mr. Burton.
I’m not going to get into this with you. You have an opinion of me that I’ll
never be able to change, but you might want to reconsider ordering your
daughter around or you’ll find yourself losing her.”
“To who? You?”
Marcus didn’t answer,
knowing the man wouldn’t listen. Instead, he opened the car door.
“You’re eighteen,
right? If you touch my daughter, I’ll have you arrested for statutory rape.”
Marcus clutched the
doorframe. The thought of ever harming Rose boiled his blood, but the sound of
that word infuriated him. “I’d never disrespect Rose. And I’ve done nothing to
make you distrust me.”
“Oh? So help me, I’ll
catch you one of these days and then have you put away. And even if I don’t,
the rumors will spread and you’ll be ostracized from this town. No one wants to
be around a sexual deviant. Besides, with your father—”
“Enough. You’ve made
your point. I won’t come around your house anymore, I can promise you that.”
“Good.” Mr. Burton
turned on his heel. “It’s about time you wised up.”
Marcus slid one foot
onto the car mat then said, “But if she comes to me, I won’t turn her away.”
With a quick slam of the door, he shoved the gearshift into drive and left the high-browed,
judgmental corporate tycoon behind.

Once you’ve discovered the Hidden World, you become part of it.

It was frightening at first, being overcome by this strange, invisible entity, but it was also

empowering. The power was greater than Zeara, yet completely at her disposal, and she knew

just what to do with it.

There is no rest for the weary as Zeara, Jake, and Magic are called upon by the very

organization that threatened their lives. A murder investigation must take place in a local little

town, but no one is quite sure who or what is dead, and why. It’s up to the team to place all the

puzzle pieces when people start dying. The problem is, the local sheriff doesn’t want to cooperate

and their most promising link to solving the case is in a psych ward. Can they solve it before

another life is lost?

EXCERPT
“Uh, well…” Zane shifted uncomfortably as he grimaced. “I’m not trained to do an

autopsy. I can test for chemicals, but I don’t know a bit about knife wounds or how to measure

how long something has been dead.”

“I feared you would say this.” Karma shook her head before waving her hand in the

air. “Ah well, there is one thing I do know how to be dealin’ with, an’ that is death. I have

methods for this.”

Jake stepped closer to Zeara and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “You aren’t going

to do magic like you did when Zeara was unconscious, are you?”

“Ni. I won’t be using magic.” The woman smiled at them, and a cold chill swept through

Zeara.

Moments ago she seemed almost normal despite the fact we were talking about shape-
shifters. She didn’t seem so damn scary. But the expression on her face reminded me all over

again that I have no idea what I’m dealing with or how dangerous things can be. Zeara snuggled

deeper into the detective’s arms as she tried to calm the fear rising in her. Something was about

to happen that would screw up what little sense she’d made of this Hidden World so far; she

just knew it. The foreboding tone in Karma’s voice had been too intense not to catch the sadistic

pleasure she seemed to be garnering from giving them a paranormal trial by fire.

“What methods will you be using, then?” Zane looked and sounded so excited that she

wanted desperately to find the nearest tree branch and smack him with it. His exuberance for all

this mumbo-jumbo junk was giving her a one-way ticket to a dire need for anger management

classes.

Karma shielded her eyes with her hand as she tilted her head back and surveyed the skies.

Above them the two turkey vultures idly continued to circle. “Celaeno! Aello!”

The loud yell startled Zeara so much, she actually jumped a little. Magic gazed up

at her, his calm expression leveled on her as if to say, “Silly human, it’s only loud words.”

Embarrassment burned her cheeks at her reaction, and she did the most mature thing she could

think of and stuck her tongue out at her cat. He twitched an ear in response, then turned his

attention back to Karma.

The sound of flapping wings had Zeara jerking her gaze upward. The two vultures were

descending, and the closer they got, the bigger she realized they were. Their wingspans were

easily eight feet wide, and as they landed near Karma, their shapes shimmered and changed.

Oh, shape-shifters who can turn into birds. Well, at least Zane will be happy now that he

finally got to see one change.

To her surprise the birds didn’t shift. At least, they didn’t shift completely. The lower half

of their bodies remained those of birds. Two stunningly beautiful faces turned to appraise her and

the two men—feminine faces attached to gorgeous auburn curls that cascaded from their heads.

Ample breasts hung from their chests, and their torsos were sleek and sculpted. Their tanned

skin was healthy, sun-kissed, and created a perfect complement to the bronze-colored feathers.

Instead of arms though, they each sported two glossy wings with fingers near the tip.

“What the fuck are those?” Jake asked. His tone mirrored the combination of fear and

awe that Zeara was experiencing.

“These are Celaeno and Aello.” Karma smirked at them.

One of the creatures lifted a wing to cover her mouth and stifled a laugh. “We are

harpies,” the other one said. The sound, almost musical, made her voice as beautiful as her face.

She blinked as she spoke to them, and a third eyelid from the corner of her eye slid across the

golden orb for a brief second.

The world dropped out from under Zeara, and she clung to Jake’s arm as she tried to

regain her senses. “H-harpies?” she asked, her words barely above a whisper.

“Yes,” the first harpy said. Her voice was slightly higher pitched, sounding more like

flutes instead of the chiming of bells. “I am Aello, and this is my sister, Celaeno.”

Zane’s silence was worrying Zeara, and she tore her gaze away from the harpies to look

at him. He stood stock-still, his mouth gaping open and his arms rigid by his sides. The outright

shock written on his features only increased her desire to hit him over the head with the nearest

object.

Karma seemed to notice Zane at the moment too, and she issued a snort. “Come now.

You discover a shifter and barely do you bat a lash, yet you find harpies so difficult?”

Her words appeared to snap him out of it. He shook his head, though his gaze remained

fastened on the harpies. “It’s not that,” he said.

“Oh? Then what is wrong with ye?” Karma asked.

He mumbled something that Zeara couldn’t hear.

Karma’s lips pressed in a thin line as she frowned at him. “I donnae understand.”

“Boobies,” Zane said, his voice loud and clear this time.

My Review

4 Stars

Really liked this book. This is the first steam punk book that I have read and i am finding it refreshing to read something a little different. The poor girl in this book has to suffer some pretty harsh things but she finds a friend in a very unlikely place. The idea of replacing body parts with mechanical parts is fascinating. I am looking forward to reading the next book Escapement to find out what happens next. This author has gotten me hooked on this series and I NEED to find out what happens to these characters.

Synopsis

Ten years after the great war of 2185 the queen’s reign is threatened by uprisings and fear. In

celebration of my sixteenth birthday it is my duty as princess to sacrifice a slave to be initiated

into the ruling council, solidifying my mother’s empire. When my own erratic powers surface I’m

captured and tried for treason. Slaves hate me, my mother wants me executed, and my only chance

of survival rests in the hands of a young man, Ryder Arteres, whose sister I sentenced to death.

Escapement Excerpt

The door swung open and four guards entered before Dred stormed in. “Malvak orders ya all

to the platform now.”

My stomach flopped. “No. It hasn’t been an hour.”

“Malvak’s orders changed.”

“You said they’d be spared,” Ryder argued.

“They be ordered to watch.”

Dred’s words stung like a laser through my heart. “No, please. You can’t. It’s too soon.”

Ryder still clutched one arm and wouldn’t let me go. “Semara, listen to me.”

“No, I won’t. This isn’t going to happen. I’ll tell Malvak who I am and order your release.”

“Not wise.” Dred shoved the key into Ryder’s cell door.

I had to do something, anything to stop this.

“We need you, Semara. You’re the only one left in this war-torn world who can protect

Raeth. Please, I promised my folks before they were murdered I’d take care of her. Once I’m

gone—”

“Don’t say that.” Tears stung my eyes and I wanted to pull him against me and disappear.

Ryder reached through the bars and held the back of my head so our foreheads touched.

“Once I’m gone, you are her only family.”

“Enough, it’s time,” Dred ordered.

The guards rushed into the cell, bound Ryder’s wrists, and dragged him from the cell. One

guard grabbed Raeth by the arm and did the same to me. Dred stood at the outside of my cell,

door open, waiting for me to exit.

“I did all I could,” Dred said with a heavy, deep tone. He bound my wrists and stepped back.

“Sorry, Malvak ordered—”

“You could do more. Trust me, you’ll regret this later. You’ll go to sleep each night with

Ryder’s face haunting your dreams. I’m still tortured by making a wrong choice when I was only

twelve.”

I shoved past him and went out to the center of town. Acid rose in my throat at the sight of

the noose hanging from a wood beam. It had to be wood. If it had been metal, I could’ve melted

it and bought some more time.

Maybe I could try Ryder’s plan and incapacitate Dred before he stopped me, then get his

gun and take a few down. If we could find cover and some metal we’d have a chance.

I watched Dred out of the corner of my eye as we approached the platform.

“Don’t try it, pretty face. I’ve trained for years to be a faster draw with me powers. Ya don’t

stand a chance. All you’ll accomplish is ya own death.”

I lifted my chin, determined to fight. “I can’t stand by and watch him die.”

“Ya don’t have a choice. None of us do,” Dred insisted.

“You do. Let me use my powers and the three of us escape. Otherwise, you’ll have innocent

blood on your hands.” I pleaded.

Wind whipped through the village. Creaks echoed from the skywalks. Water swished

through the steel waterways above. Cannons and barbed wire lined an exterior wall. It was a

fortress.

Mother had been right to fear them. Even if I freed Ryder, how could we get out? I

suspected the walls were electrified. Maybe I could short out the wires, but I’d need Raeth’s help

to demolish the wall.

Even if we managed to break through the wall, then what? We’d have to get a ship and

figure out where we were.

There had to be a way to save him. I had to be missing something.

A horn sounded and people came out of homes and buildings, flooding the street to watch

Ryder’s execution. Didn’t they see they were no better than the council?

I wrung my hands and pulled at my rope bindings that rubbed my skin raw.

The smell of animals and desert sand carried on the wind.

A tall man appeared on one of the skywalks with a fluffy cape of animal fur lining his

huge frame. I couldn’t make out his features, but he definitely had a tattoo running across his

forehead. A reflection of sunlight off his face indicated some piercings.

“This here Neumarian is charged with bringing the council’s wrath to our land. Do we wish

to sacrifice our way of life and be enslaved to the council?”

“No,” the crowd yelled back as if in a trance.

“Terminate the prisoner and send his body as a gift to the queen.”

“No!” I cried out and ran for the platform. “You’re wrong. We only wish to go in peace. The

queen doesn’t know we’re here. We brought a gift!”

I ran up the steps, but a guard snagged my hair, knocking me down so hard the wood

cracked against my shoulder. A pain shot down my arm. Ryder shouldered the man and raced to

my side. “Semara, please, don’t do this.”

“I can’t watch you die,” I managed through sobs.

The guards tore us apart and placed Ryder on top of a box.

I fought with all my strength and drew heat from my core to my hands, but the mind

splitting pain made me collapse. I lay on the floor of the platform forced to watch the noose

being secured around his neck.

“Proceed with the execution.”

The guard kicked the box out from under Ryder and the rope snapped tight around his

throat.

My Review

5 Stars

What an awesome story. All the action and drama. This is the first steam punk series I’ve read and I love it. This author writes so well that you feel yourself being pulled into the story, as if you are right there. You feel for the characters, with all that they have to go through, all the pain and emotional trauma, but this book has good moments too, the budding romance is so refreshing to read amongst all the trauma. I can’t wait to read Pendulum the next in the series. It’s a good thing I bought it before I started reading the series.

Pendulum Excerpt

Ryder tipped my chin up and pressed a kiss to my forehead. At feeling his suppressed

desire and longing, I nuzzled his neck, seeking more, wanting to touch him, not through his

uniform but his bare skin.

“Shh. You need sleep. Nightmares have been keeping you up. You’re exhausted. Wish

I could be there to hold you through them, but we should arrive at the ENR base soon. It’s been

too long.” His hand slipped to the nape of my neck. “Once we reach land, no one will keep us

apart.”

Heat surged to my face and I leaned into his hands. “Nightmares? How did you…oh,

your sister. Great. Guess Raeth can’t keep a secret.” I knew Raeth only told her brother out of

concern, but I’d still chastise my best friend when I got back to my room.

“She just confirmed what I’d felt through our bond.” Ryder drew a circle around the tip

of my nose with his. “What you been dreaming’ about?”

His closeness weakened my resolve to keep it from him. He’d think I was crazy.

“Tell me,” he urged, brushing his lips across mine in a feather-light touch.

My breath hitched and the memories of beatings and torture faded when his thumb glided

down my cheek. “It doesn’t matter. Kiss me.”

His lips claimed mine with a too long-suppressed urgency. He needed and wanted me as

much as I did him. If we didn’t make it to land soon, they’d have mutiny on their hands.

I inhaled his scent, absorbing it into my soul. Even after all this time beneath the sea, a

hint of Earth remained and I savored the aroma. He’d always smell the same to me. A musky,

earthy smell, with a hint of freedom. The aroma wrapped around my body like a shield of

strength.

Steps thumped down the corridor and he broke the kiss. “Tell me. Before we have to go.”

I panted and shook my head. From the moment we’d met, he twisted me up inside until

I’d share whatever he wanted to know. “Images mostly. My mother, my father. I never see his

face, but I see hers.” I suppressed a shudder. “None of it makes sense. It’s almost like I feel

physical pain, but I can’t see the memory.”

Ryder’s eyes narrowed. “What’s Gordon been doing to you during those sessions?”

“Gordon? Nothing. He’s been helping me remember things. He says I’ve been

reprogrammed. He’s trained in opening the mind back up and he thinks I could remember

something that would help the rebellion.”

Ryder glanced down the hall. “Maybe so, but I don’t like you suffering. Mighty easy

for him to push you into helping. But you need to know when to back off. You been training so

much and been working with Captain Gordon, you haven’t gotten any rest.”

“Maybe that’s because I don’t want to.” I stared up at him. “I’m frightened, Ryder.

Terrified my mother’s programmed me into being some kind of weapon.”

“I won’t let that happen.” He kissed me again then rested his forehead against mine. “We,

just the two of us, need to find some time alone.”

I struggled to stay calm, to not let my frustration and jealousy out. I failed. “The last time

I tried to take some time off, you were busy with Mart and her training. Can’t you train with

someone else, like me? Why does it always have to be her?”

“Jealous?” The side of his lip quirked up into a teasing grin.

Yes! “No! No more than you are of Gordon.”

He straightened, his hand moving down from my neck to my lower back. “Let’s not do

this. It’s late. I don’t want to argue.” Hugging me, he lifted me into the air until I was at eye level

then he nuzzled my neck. “Rather do other things with you than fight.”

A giggle slipped from my lips.

“Love that sound.” Ryder nipped my earlobe.

“What sound?”

“You happy. Someday, we’ll go to that Resort Territory of yours,” Ryder slid his nose

down the side of my neck, “where we can laugh all day.” His tongue traced the path his nose had

just made. “Swim naked in that lake of yours.”

A guard stomped along the metal grate floor and halted a few meters away. “Hey, you

two. Lights out in five. Don’t make me throw you in the brig.”

My head still spun from Ryder’s words. He gently lowered me to the ground. My knees

shook, but I managed to remain upright.

Ryder scowled.

“Now,” the guard ordered, his face grim and determined.

Ryder growled low in his chest then kissed my cheek. “Until later,” he whispered.

I’m going to start out saying this I hate cliffhangers. Okay I got that off my chest. Make sure you own Balance before reading this, I have to wait a little over a week and I’m going to go insane. I have to know what happens next. Don’t get me wrong I loved this book and I love the series. This author is a gifted writer and you get so caught up in the story when it ends you’re in shock. Now that I’ve taken a second and calmed down I can tell you this series is awesome.

Synopsis

Life on a war-ravaged Earth is a dying experience. Finally, after years of tyranny, the rebellion rises.

Once I rescue my fiancé Ryder Arteres, I, and the rebel general, will fight to free our people. In a

war where alliances shift and friends betray one another, will the final battle prove the truth of the

prophecy the queen has so feared—her death—or will I lose everyone I love?

Balance Excerpt

“There is more to the prophecy.” Fallon stated.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“You realize the claim of the Triune is real.”

I snickered, “Yes, I can’t deny that anymore.”

“That leaked from our council during the war, but we were able to keep the rest of the intel to

ourselves. You see, one of the members of the Neumarian Council could estimate future events

based on current trends. It’s sort of a statistical prophecy in a way. Of course, it’s deeper than that.

The one who had the gift also channeled more than just facts, emotions, psychology, the art of body

language and behavior. All the information was churned up and a prophecy was spit out.”

“What is the rest?” I asked.

“Penton must be the protector of the Triune…” He nodded to Harrison and a click sounded in

my head. Fallon leaned close and whispered. “…the one who will risk his life and die to save the

Triune.”

I cupped my hands over my mouth to stop the gasp from reaching Raeth’s ears.

My pulse thrashed at my neck. I slowly lowered my hands to my side. “You think he’s going to die

out there, don’t you?”

Fallon clasped my hands in his.

“Yes.”

My Review

5 Stars

Fabulous read! Loved it. Love this series. I am so glad I read this book it flowed seamlessly after Pendulum. I don’t know if I could have waited any longer to read this book I was very anxious after reading Pendulum to get my hands on this one. These characters even though in the midst of war show so much love and endurance. I was glad for the HEA, was sad when they lost loved ones and ecstatic over the outcome of the story. This story just flowed I couldn’t put it down, I kept telling myself I needed to get some sleep but I couldn’t I had to know what was going to happen. This book was so worth the book hangover I had the next day.

She’s been told her life is like the movie Romancing the Stone but at times she feels more like Indiana Jones with boobs.
WENDY AND THE LOST BOYS ~ Book One

LONDON BROIL ~ Book Two
When we last saw Wendy Darling and Roger Jolley in WENDY AND THE LOST BOYS, they were hot on the trail of Egyptian icons stolen from the British Museum. Wendy is now in a frantic race against time and a murderer as she searches for the last Lost Boy hidden somewhere in London while a killer heat wave invades the city. Wendy is held captive over a fish ‘n’ chips shop while Roger’s life is threatened. Can Wendy escape her captors, rescue Roger, and find the missing Lost Boy before the murderer strikes again?
CAIRO CAPER ~ Book Three
Part-time tomb raider and full-time real estate broker, Wendy Darlin joins her lover, archaeologist Roger Jolley, in a quest for Cleopatra’s tomb. All they have to do is get from Cairo to the Temple of Taporisi Magna alive. Armed only with a couple of hijacked ashtrays and faced with a trek across the blazing Sahara desert can Wendy out-maneuver Russian oligarchs, a dozen Dark Force mercenaries, and Roger’s chubby ex-girlfriend in time to find the tomb and seal it before chaos erupts in Egypt?

What are you working on now?

With the greatest respect for Jane Austen, I have taken Pride and Prejudice out for a spin. As I progress through the writing of Mister Darcy’s Dogs, I will be posting the newest chapters of on Second Act Café. I’d like to invite readers to comment as the novella progresses.

Although inspired by Pride and Prejudice, my story takes place in modern times. It’s a teeny bit like Bridget Jones Diary but my heroine tends to be feistier and the wealthy, handsome Darcy has a secret identity. If my fans enjoy this riff on a classic I may continue to pay homage to Jane Austen and create a series.

What are you reading now?

I recently read the book that inspired my journey into Austen-ville. The Trouble with Horses by Elizabeth Ann West. This is a delightful Pride and Prejudice variation novella. Elizabeth was kind enough to encourage me to take my sense of humor in a new direction. I am quite excited to see what transpires between William Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett as they encounter both pride and prejudice in the twenty-first century.

What flavor is your writing style?

I love legal thrillers, clever comedies, and noir mysteries. Over the years I was able to take workshops with Stephen King, Robert B. Parker, and other greats. I began to hone my one-liners aiming to become a female Elmore Leonard. I’m still not there, but I keep working on my adverb-lite diet. How will my style compliment Jane Austen? Stay tuned!

What books have most influenced your life most?

More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon had a profound effect on me. There is something in both the tale and the telling that will forever haunt me. I have a signed copy of the book and will treasure it always.

Ghosts by Marsha Parker. The book is not about ghosts by rather about love. There is a scene in the book where the current day narrator meets her love and soulmate from the 12th century. Toward the end of the story as she questions his ethereal presence and her longing for him, he appears one night. He leads her to a Welsh meadow where under the moonlight, they lay on a sheepskin and…well, the result is the most beautiful love scene I have ever read.

Was writing always the first thing you wanted to do in life?

I spent the first four years of my life in our hall closet trying to turn into a black panther when that didn’t work I decided to become a professional majorette. Again I was met with disappointment. In kindergarten I learned to press lightly with my crayons, I then realized I was destined to become a writer.

I’ve always had a passion to write humor and horror – closely related genres. In eighth grade I started an underground newspaper patterned after Mad Magazine. Unfortunately our nun did not appreciate my demented humor. Threatened with excommunication I took my paper underground until I graduated Catholic school.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first published book was The Adventures of a Love Investigator.

I was coming off a short marriage and a protracted divorce. I lost everything I owned prior to the marriage. I needed answers to why I continuously accepted the wrong men into my heart when my guy friends where such nice men. Why couldn’t I tell the difference?

I set out to learn about men armed only with a tape recorder and a quirky sense of humor. I wanted to learn how men really felt about love, sex, and commitment. My goal had been to conduct 1000 intimate interviews with men in their own man caves. I wrongly estimated it would take one year. Six years and 527 men later, I had become The Woman Who Knew Too Much.

During my odyssey, I met men who have sex with married women, and men whose wives have sex with other men. I listened to men who have no idea how to approach a woman, and men who have it down to a science. I discovered many men who went to unbelievable lengths in search of love.

I learned many things, one of which is that I make a much better Singleton.

While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?

I am always my heroines. That’s why I write in the first person. I have had more the average wild and wacky adventures in my real life. These escapades color the pickles my ladies stumble into. Wendy Darlin Tomb Raider takes the physical risks I avoid. She does share a number of my phobias like fear of getting her face wet and terror of holes in fabric. This has caused us both no end of trauma.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Please join me as I pay homage to Jane Austen in Mister Darcy’s Dogs. The first excerpts will appear on the Second Act Café in August. I’d love to hear your thoughts as I progress through this first novella in a new genre.

Barbara Silkstone is the best-selling author of the Wendy Darlin Tomb Raider series that includes: Wendy and the Lost Boys, London Broil, Cairo Caper, Miami Mummies, Vulgarian Vamp, Wendy Darlin Tomb Raider Boxed Set. Her Romantic Suspense Fairy Tales series includes: The Secret Diary of Alice in Wonderland, Age 42 and Three-Quarters; Wendy and the Lost Boys; Zo White and the Seven Morphs. For a squirt of paranormal comedy try: Cold Case Morphs. True fiction fan? Try: The Adventures of a Love Investigator.

Silkstone’s writing has been described as “perfectly paced and pitched – shades of Janet Evanovich and Carl Hiaasen – without seeming remotely derivative. Fast moving action that shoots from the hip with bullet-proof characterization.”

BLURB
She can kill with a kiss. But can assassin Tyree also heal one man’s grief, and bring peace

to a galaxy threatened by war?

For Tyree of the Su, being an assassin isn’t simply something she was trained for. It’s

the sole reason for her existence. A genetically enhanced clone—one of many in Refuge—she’s

about to learn her secluded lifestyle, and that of all her kind, is under threat by a race capable of

neutralizing their special talents to leave them defenseless.

For Zander D’joren, being a diplomat has not only cost him his appearance, but also the

love of his life. Scarred, grieving, he must nonetheless continue in his role as co-delegate to the

fearsome Tier-vane or risk a conflict that could only end one way.

Now both of them need to keep each other alive and maintain a perilous deception

long enough to renegotiate the treaty with the Tier-vane, or throw their people into a war that

could wipe out Terrans and Inc-Su alike. But there’s more at stake than humanity, whether

true or modified. Can the love growing between them save them both? Or merely hasten their

destruction?

EXCERPT
A thrill of excitement shivered down her spine as she backed away a few steps with

Zander following. He shrugged off his formal outer robes, and for the first time she could

appreciate the broad expanse of his chest, the close-fitting fabric stretched over well-defined

muscles. It appeared he hadn’t allowed his physique to slacken, despite leaving the Galactic

Commission.

“Are you ready?” she asked.

Zander spread his hands in an open gesture to say that he was.

So why is he just standing there like a defunct Manikin instead of poised to fight?

Tyree took her combat position and Zander matched her, just as the Manikin had done.

She’d never fought a human in combat practice before. This should be interesting.

She sprang forward and aimed two rapid punches at his face. Zander evaded both with a

speed and grace totally out of proportion to his bulk. Her third he blocked with little effort, and

she stepped back to reassess her strategy. But only for an instant.

A quick step forward and she lashed upward with her foot, snapping his head back.

Zander staggered but didn’t fall. Her second kick failed as he grabbed her ankle and jerked her

off balance. She twisted as she dropped and caught him hard in the knee. Zander collapsed. Both

rolled aside, and then jumped up to face each other again.

Not bad.

Tyree bit back a laugh as they exchanged blows, each faster than the last. Zander blocked

or evaded most, but not all. His skill almost matched hers, yet his defenses were just a fraction

too slow. Each move she made tested his reach, his reflexes and his stamina until she could sense

him struggling a little.

Time for the kill.

She floored him with a kick to the chest, the full weight of her augmented density behind

it, but as she moved in to finish the fight he dove into her. Tyree landed on her back hard enough

to drive the breath from her lungs.

Zander had her pinned to the ground. She bucked but couldn’t shift him. The triumphant

smile on his face sent rage blazing through her gut. With hardly a whisper, she Misted out and

went through him. Golden warmth filled her for a second before she pulled free. Zander pushed

to his feet and spun to meet her, but she cranked up her molecular density and punched him hard

in the chest. He collapsed, gasping and coughing. In one fluid movement she sat astride him at

full density, and the air whumphed out of his lungs. She pinioned his arms with her hands, her

face hovering mere centimeters above his.

As her breathing slowed to normal, a huge grin split her face. She’d made a vow to

herself to jump him, and she’d done it. Perhaps it was childish, but it warmed her heart.

“Your…reputation…is well deserved,” he gasped.

“You’re not so bad yourself,” she complimented him. He’d fought well, but perhaps

not quite with the determination—and certainly not the desperation—of most opponents she’d

faced. “For a human.”

“Thank you. Perhaps we could try this again tomorrow?”

Tyree laughed. As much as he could irritate the hell out of her, he was equally

amusing. “If you want to spend most of your morning on the floor…”

He gazed up at her with that easy smile, making no effort to struggle. Most humans,

without the influence of her pheromones and the distraction of her naked body writhing above

theirs, would not have been so trusting. So compliant. She found herself staring at his mouth.

What would it be like to kiss him, without the use of her talents? Would it be as satisfying? As

sensual? The warmth of him, the firmness of his body beneath hers, sent heat spiraling through

her abdomen.

“Perhaps you could let me up now?” His words jerked her from such musings. What the

hell was she thinking?
