Hello. I’m Leigh Ellwood and I’m part of the Sexy To Go team of authors. So far we have published six

box sets of hot, romantic shorts. Some are standalone stories, and others are serialized over the

different bundles we’ve published. So far I have contributed three shorts (one M/F pairing, the rest

M/M) and one two-parter. My June Sexy To Go contribution is Part One of another M/M story, called

“On the Sly.”

“On the Sly” is part of a new series I have developed called The Men of Sylvester Street. I got the idea for

the series on a trip to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. We spent the day walking around the boardwalk

and shops. Even though I live in a beach town, this one seemed more authentic to me for the

amusements and older stores. Where I live the city wants to modernize and build enormous luxury

hotels. Here, it seemed quainter, and one part of the beach interested me.

I found a street with several LGBTQ friendly stores, including a bookstore. It was a welcome sight,

especially with the closure of some better-known gay bookstores around the country in the last decade.

We spent some time walking the neighborhood, and as I took in the sights the ideas formed. I have

already written a series set in a small Virginia town, but those stories aren’t exclusively M/M or LGBT.

Various residents have their loves stories told there, but I thought to myself: how about a series

centered completely around an LGBT neighborhood?

I chose the name Sylvester Street for my fictional neighborhood because I like the way it sounded. The

first story, “He’s So Sly,” appeared in a previous Sexy To Go bundle, and the next one, “Sly Fox,” was

published in two parts over the next two sets. With the first part of “On the Sly” available in the June

set, I’m going back in time to the late 80s to set up a few character developments.

It is my hope in writing this new series to show how people connect in different situations. Men will

enjoy fun and sexy times, of course, but there are issues to overcome in order to be happy. With the

recent Supreme Court decision, plus decisions in health care, there are new ideas to explore for future

stories. Eventually I’d like to write enough stories for a print omnibus. After that, the Women of

Sylvester Street maybe?

If you enjoy M/M romance, you’ll find stories by me and other authors in the various sets. You can visit

our Facebook Page ( for the low down.

When I Grow Up by Patricia Asedegbega

When I grow up…

“You need a plan B,” said Alicia’s mother when at five years old she told her what she

wanted to be when she grew up. Thirty odd years later, Alicia is on plan D: sharing a flat, no

tangible savings, and working for hateful Julia, whose sole purpose in life is to make her

existence utterly miserable. Good thing she has Oscar and the girls to make the long hours

at work bearable. But when a series of events tears the close-knit group apart, putting

friendships and motives under suspicion, will Alicia be able to restore balance and set things

right? More importantly, will she ever be able to upgrade her life to at least plan C?

To be able to get lost in a book and actually not notice what is going on around us is

priceless. That familiar feeling we get when finally arrive at the end of the book or when we

stay up way past our bedtime because we can´t wait to see what happens next is a clear

indication that an author has done a good job.

My favourite genre has always been mystery. I read other genres too but the ones that

make me look for stolen moments to read one more page knowing it will bring me to the

bitter-sweet end are suspense packed novels. I have read quite a lot of books belonging to that

genre and discovered a number of authors but for me the queen of mystery is; Agatha Christie

because even though she did not have at her disposition when she wrote her books all the

modern scientific techniques we have today to resolve crimes, she used the basic but infallible

“human nature” to arrive at her conclusions. There is always a human hand behind everything

and the motives behind every crime never change, people are driven by the same basic human

emotions, the positive and the negative and those are timeless.

As a writer, I try to create the same expectation and surprise in my readers as my

favourite authors did for me. Nothing gives me more pleasure than when somebody tells me

that the end of my book surprised them or that they had no idea who the guilty person was.

This for me means that I have done a good job as it isn´t easy creating suspense packed scenes

that are both logical and plausible. But, that is the beauty of writing fiction; it allows us to

create parallel stories to reality, giving us the ability to mold and change events to achieve our

desired results.

I think in order to go through life successfully; we need to be able to find humour even

in the difficult situations we face. So in my novels, I always include elements that make the

readers laugh or chuckle (at least I try to provide that release). Either in my characters or in the

diverse situations they find themselves in. People read in their leisure time and it is a great

escape from our mundane and daily troubles. So one of the main aims I have as a writer is to

entertain them.

To everyone who has the ability to create a world of fiction in which anything is

possible, I urge you to take the plunge and share your work. Most authors have a defined

genre even though we might dabble in others from time to time just to see if we can produce

something else in a different setting and still capture the attention of our readers. It is a very

competitive world out there and there are lots of authors fighting to make their mark in the

world of letters and words, but I firmly believe that there is a place for all of us; you just need

to keep writing and trying.

A Taste For Mystery

Follow private detectives Carolyn Woods, Jack Heart, and friends as they try to navigate murder, mystery, and

romantic entanglements. Two novellas, two detectives, two lovers….what could go wrong?

He had six-pack abs, and I wanted to feel the carbonation.

This one dressed like the stereotype of a construction worker, down to the handkerchief he used to wipe

sweat off his forehead. I don’t know if he or the hot day brought it out, but sweat poured off of me too. He had no

interest in me as a person, though. I was invading his territory. Still, I enjoyed the view. For my part, I knew my

clothes looked crappy. I didn’t have to wear uniforms anymore, but my street clothes, well they were very—street.

So there I stood, a turd in the sun in front of this Adonis. Oh well.

He pointed to a small trailer up a muddy hill. The supervisor I asked to see apparently stayed in there.

Stayed, as in never left. Great. Mud. Now I’d be a dried turd in the sun. Adonis went back to digging and I started

the trek up the hill. At least I came with boots. Steel toed.

Once I made it to the trailer, I heard an argument going on inside.

“Look, I don’t care who you are. The plans are publically filed. Go get them yourself!” yelled someone.

Then I heard a voice I knew. Calm, cool, subversive. “Is there any reason you’re being so difficult? A man

did die on your watch.”

An encounter I hadn’t planned on. Well, at least not until later tonight. I knocked loudly on the door and

with my sweetest voice said, “Hello, boys. Am I interrupting something?”

A Taste for Mystery

Okay, yes, this title also happens to be the title of my new book, A Taste for Mystery: Two

novellas, but I wanted to write about the mystery genre in general.  See, I grew up heavily

into reading. Agatha Christie never failed to enthrall me. I didn’t much care who her

detectives were, but rather the way she set up circumstances and how it all came together in

the end. I have to say though, as a child, I peaked at the ending a number of times. Very

unsportsmanlike but I can still remember some of the devices Christie used till this day.

My mother was hooked on Sue Grafton. What an ingenious idea, using the alphabet to

guarantee a darn long series. She is so popular my ninety-three year old grandmother liked to

read Sue Grafton and when she could no longer read, I bought her the audio versions instead.

I was also a fan of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine (still in business.) I didn’t have to peak

at the end anymore. The stories were short and inventive. Perfect for my attention span. I also

read all of Sherlock Holmes but have to admit the movies with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude

Law were exquisitely done—the dialogue, the acting, the humor. The actual mystery took a

back seat. It’s that way with books too at times. That’s when you know your characters have

come to life and really thrive.

Patricia Cornwell is another hot mystery author. Her female Medical Examiner series caught

on in a big way. I like Ms. Cornwell. She hails from my home state of Virginia. Her books

have won many awards. She has a very hip looking picture on Goodreads as well. Brava.

There are many ways to write a mystery. One can rely on psychological suspense, tried and

true detectives, surprise endings, or even add some romance to the mix, which is what I did in

A Taste for Mystery. That little sizzle just makes it more interesting.  The two novellas flow

together in time and with the characters. I’d like to continue to take the main two characters

out for a spin, but that depends of course on how many others find them interesting.

Life itself, is full of little mysteries. For example, why is spell-check demanding that I use the

word enthral with one “l” in this article? Dictionaries recognize two “l’s” as predominant, and

that is being kind. Why have I grown an entire inch in height, decades and decades into my

life? Why is the five minutes I absolutely must have to sleep extra the same five minutes that

puts me into the rush hour zone of traffic to work? One could go mad trying to solve these

So we leave mystery to gorgeous men and women, entertainment, and quantum physics. And

mystery novels.

Long live the question mark.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I was done. Finished. Out.

For the past seven years, I belonged to a division of the government that wasn’t on the books. I

operated alone. There was a mission: I either failed or succeeded. If I failed, that meant I was dead.

After all the shit I’d seen, done, caused—I survived. It was a fucking miracle.

I was the best at what I did, but there were times I saw my life flash before my eyes. But when you’re

the government’s covert assassin, what else was there to expect. If I was captured, I didn’t exist. If I

died, I didn’t exist. If I succeeded, I was assigned my next mission.

The plane wheels screeched as I touched down in Alaska. Finally, I was where I wanted to be.

At times, I wasn’t sure I knew who I was anymore. My identity was erased from the system long ago. For

the last three months, I’d been working on getting released from the program. It was a slow process

with how deep I was in with Black Division.

Those suits knew I wouldn’t share anything I’d done. Hell, half the time I wanted to forget. After three

months of debriefing, the government let me out. Of course, there was an underlying threat.

If we so much as suspect you’ve betrayed this country, consider yourself dead, Mr. Bradley.

Yeah, nothing else was new. I wasn’t an idiot. I knew I’d be monitored for years to come, but they

wouldn’t find anything.
