The Syrian Virgin by Zack Love With my review

BT Banner

Title: The Syrian Virgin

Author: Zack Love

Genre: Contemporary Fiction and Political/Interracial Romance

Cover Design: Pink Ink Designs by Cassy Roop

Synopsis

Anissa is traumatized by the most brutal conflict of the 21st Century: the Syrian Civil War. In 2012, Islamists in Homs terrorize a Syrian-Christian community and destroy everything that a young woman holds dear. Narrowly escaping death, Anissa restarts her devastated life as a college student in NY. She is bewildered and lost — a virgin in every sense.

But despite her inexperience with men and life in the United States, Anissa is quickly drawn to two powerful individuals: Michael Kassab, the Syrian-American leader working to found the first Mideast Christian state, and Julien Morales, her Columbia University professor who runs a $20 billion hedge fund.

Complicating matters, Michael is still attached to his ex-girlfriend and Julien is the most sought after bachelor in Manhattan (and has hidden demons even his therapist can’t extract). Anissa’s heart and her communal ties pull her in different directions, as she seeks hope and renewal in a dark world.

WARNING: This book is about a young woman’s difficult journey: her escape from Syria’s Civil War, her transition to a new a country, and the relationships that she forms along the way, including her romantic interests in two very different men. The story is set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War and makes reference to violent acts, sometimes in detail. There is some occasional profanity and a few scenes that depict sexual intimacy. Accordingly, the recommended minimum age for readers is 16. The novel might be compared to books like “The Diary of Anne Frank” or “The Kite Runner.”

Excerpt

We were peacefully rallying for our cause, when some strangers accosted me and started to debate us. But then it became clear that they didn’t really want to debate as much as harass . One of them then spat on me and tore up my sign, and then, as I was wiping off his spit from my face, I saw the placard in Michael’s left hand fall to the grass, as his right hand closed into an angry fist. Then I saw his clenched hand barrel thunderously from his side until it landed smack on the nose of the giant guy who had spat on me. I actually heard the thud of the impact, and the man just collapsed to the ground from the force of Michael’s blow. He was out cold.

“Come on, shitheads – who’s next?!” Michael shouted at the first two counter- protestors, gesturing them to step up for a fight. By then, their entire group had gathered around, so Michael was even more outnumbered. But his dangerous rage was palpable – as if he alone could destroy everyone there. More of our protesters also started showing up, after hearing or seeing the commotion. But they weren’t needed in the end. The counter-protestors there raised their hands in surrender and backed away in fear of this large man who just knocked out an even larger man with a single punch. “OK, OK, take it easy. We’re leaving,” they said.

“Apologize to her. Now!” he boomed, ready to rip them to shreds. The first two protesters looked at me meekly.

“We’re sorry… We’re sorry, ma’am, that our friend got out of hand.”

“Yeah, he shouldn’t have done that.”

“Now get the fuck out of here!” Michael commanded. “It’s cool, dude, we’re leaving,” one of them said, as the two of them picked up their dazed comrade with a bloody and probably broken nose, and left the area with him stumbling between them…

I went over to Michael and very conspicuously put my arm around his waist. I then pulled him in for a long and intense kiss, as if our future together depended on it. After a few minutes, we finally came up for air, and my face felt flush with impatient passion.

“Let’s go back,” I said.

Surprisingly I liked this book. At first I was thinking was not going to because it seemed so depressing and real. I tend to read stories that help me escape the real life drama. Even though i found the story really deep and quite heart wrenching it was still really good. The depth and detail that this was written was awesome. I can’t wait to read the next one in this series and to check out more books from this author.

About The Author

Zack Love graduated from Harvard College, where he studied mostly literature, psychology, philosophy, and film. After college, he moved to New York City and took a corporate consulting job that had absolutely nothing to do with his studies. The attacks of September 11, 2001 inspired him to write a novelette titled “The Doorman” and heightened his interest in the Middle East. A decade later, that interest extended to the Syrian Civil War, which provided the backdrop for his latest work. In late 2013, Zack began releasing his unpublished works of fiction and became a full-time author. He has published comedy, psychological and philosophical fiction, and romance. Zack enjoys confining himself to one genre about as much as he likes trying to sum up his existence in one paragraph.

Blurb:
Deck the halls with all things kinky. Jonas is an incubus with an incurable lust for gingerbread and holiday lights. When he finds himself falling for Holly Pendleton, the woman he has marked as the final soul to end his contract, he faces a heart wrenching decision: take what he needs to feed his hunger or sacrifice himself for the woman who has lit his own demonic soul on fire. Tied up with red ribbons, Holly just might be Jonas’s deepest Christmas wish and the one woman who could set him free.
Excerpt:
“It’s twisted.” Mallory sniped, her tone coolly disapproving. Grabbing Jonas by the arm, they trudged down the main street of the Old Towne shopping district, dodging tourists and rabid consumers on a mission.
“What?”
“You’ve lost your mind completely. Here? At a shopping mall? Seriously?”
“Why not? It’s not like they’ll even notice.” Jonas glanced in Mallory’s direction and stared after the white coat of a woman he’d just seen in the crowd. It was strange, but it almost seemed like she was following them. Jonas didn’t care. He stuffed the panic down and resumed his vigil. Somewhere out there was his last conquest. He just had to find her.
Holiday music piped through the air and the smell of chestnuts roasting wafted toward the crowd. The Carver Hills Old Towne Winter Carnival was in full force and it warmed Jonas’s soul to see it. Throwing caution to the wind, he let out another burst of energy and sent it spiraling into the crowd. What could it hurt? He was here on a shopping expedition of his own, and it wasn’t for the latest transforming doll or gadget. Nope. Lust was his mission. He was hungry.
“Because…” Mallory’s voice trailed off as she patted the squirming dog in her purse. Terrance yipped and gave an indignant growl. Stuffed into a red sweater, the little black Chihuahua looked absolutely miserable.
“Oh my God, Jonas. Why do you have to always pick the toughest crowd? It’s a needle in a haystack.”
“You’re entitled to your opinion. I, for one, am going to check things out and find something, or someone, to eat.” Jonas’s lips curved up in a smile at Mallory’s irritated and completely unladylike snort.
“Mallory, if I want a cheeseburger I’ll go to a drive-through. I want something a little more substantial. And that means I’m going to have to work for it, okay?”
She stared at him, a mutinous look on her face. Terrance yipped and she reached down absently to pet him. He shook, trying to curl himself into a ball inside Mallory’s large gold purse but having a hard time.
“You’d better get him in out of the cold. The little guy’s shaking like a leaf.”
“He’s fine,” she snapped.
“Okay. Don’t say I didn’t warn you when his little bladder decides it’s time to void all over your cell.”
“Ugh! Jonas. That’s disgusting. Terrence wouldn’t do that, would you, honey?” Mallory reached down and gave the dog a kiss on the top of his smooth black head.
The dog whined and shook.
“Go on, Mal. I’ll be fine.” Please. So I can get down to business.
He knew what he wanted. Lust was, after all, his personal vice of the seven deadlies. It really didn’t matter the form. It was usually sex that got people into trouble, but any old lust would do. And right now, he wanted to indulge in a little proclivity of his own. If Mallory would leave him the hell alone, that is. The need was there and it was clawing at his gut relentlessly. But so was the desire to revel in the holidays. If things went badly, it would be his last ride on the bus, so to speak. He didn’t want to miss a thing.
This was his most favorite time of year. Christmas. Twinkling lights. Tacky reindeer yard ornaments. Tinsel. Garlands. Ah, the things you could do with a garland. A little tricky rope work and a willing partner and you had yourself your own little bondage Christmas carol. A happy smile tilted up the corner of his mouth. It was funny as Hell, really. A lust demon with a fetish for Christmas ornaments.

Awesome final book to this series. It concluded very well. I am hoping for more to come maybe the next generation, but I am happy with how it ended. I was in tears reading this, I won’t say which part because you need to read to find out. As I’ve said before in my reviews of the other books in this series I LOVE this series, the writing, the plots, and the characters. All of it. I am going to miss these warriors. I believe I am going to have to reread whenever I feel the need for them. 🙂

Excerpt

But where to find an angel? Just as his kind haunted bars and restaurants, where the

old sins of lust and gluttony rose strongest in humans, so angels would be drawn to places

where hope burned brightest. Hospitals. Aid centers. Churches were a rare commodity as the

twenty-second century progressed, preserved more for their architectural value than any

religious use. Sometimes people would marry there, strong traditionalists still clinging to the

past. The only church in Lucien’s territory—which was larger than most—was St.

Bartholomew’s. It was as good a place as any to start.

The ever present buzz of aerial traffic and the unceasing sounds of sheer humanity

were muted here. The church was an anachronism left over from an earlier age. True gothic

architecture compared to the neo-gothic and faux Art Deco style of the modern city. No

holographic advertising was permitted here, a blasphemy to the charity of the church. No

black marble and chrome. Once built of sandy colored carved stone, the years and pollution

had stained the majority of the masonry dark, like the inside of a coffee machine that had

never been cleaned. The toxins in the atmosphere had eaten away at the detailed carvings,

gargoyles and grotesques with blind, blurred faces distorted beyond their original ugliness.

The turrets and spires had lost their fine edge until they looked more like sandcastles left

exposed too long to the elements. And yet still it stood, radiating an ancient power, of faith,

prayer and hope now dwindling, but still refusing to relinquish its hold in the old stone. Too

many people in years past had imbued the building with their blind faith for it to ever die

completely.

Lucien glared at the offending building, repelled by more than its appearance.

Hallowed ground. Despite its fading power, Lucien wasn’t immune. Although it couldn’t

destroy him, it would cost him. The farther into the shadow of the church he ventured, the

more the weight of his sins bowed his shoulders. A huge burden after so many centuries in

his master’s service. But as a demon, he also had the greater strength to bear them. His steps

slowing, he trudged up the steps, each harder than the one before, until he reached the

massive arched wooden doors. So much wood cost more than any mortal could now ever

afford, and only the severe penalties for defacing such a monument had stopped them from

being plundered. Lucien paused, placing one hand on the twisted metal ring that would

unlock the door. His forehead ached already, and his wing stumps prickled. He sucked in a

long, deep breath and tried to straighten his back. Then he turned the handle and pushed the

door open.

 About the Author
I’m Amie Nichols, and this is my bio. I live in Iowa with my amazing, supportive husband. He is my rock and my king, and treats me like all woman should be treated. (Like a spoiled Queen)
I have two miniature dachshunds that are my babies, and they love to keep me company when I am writing away on my next WIP.
I’m about to publish my 6th book, and can hardly believe how my life has changed. I’m called an author, and still can’t believe it. I’ve have met some amazing woman on my journey so far, and have learned so much. (Sometimes the hard way.) I’ve been like a sponge soaking up all the information I can on how the publishing world works. It’s been a rollercoaster ride so far with its ups and its downs.
No matter what, I will never regret anything I’ve done. You can’t succeed if you don’t try, and if you don’t try you won’t succeed. One of my favorite quotes “If the dream is big enough the facts don’t matter”.
Some other info about me, I love my family, friends, wine and anything caffeinated. I also love writing HEA. For the same reason I won’t watch a movie that I know will make me cry, (with the exception of Steel Magnolias) I will never write a book without a HEA. There might be a few twists and turns, a cliffhanger or two. But ultimately my stories will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. For me, reading is entertainment, a way to escape this crazy insane world. If a book leaves me feeling sad, mad or gut wrenched, it is not for me. There is enough gut-wrenching sadness in this world, I don’t need to read about it too.
I started writing 3 years ago, and have no plans on stopping. So keep your eye on me because with the help of some amazing people and my wonderful fans, this girl is going to be on the New York Times best selling list someday.

BLURB
Unexplained corpses? An unearthly visitor? One game between her team and the

playoffs? Yeah, it’s been that kind of day for Francy Mac.

People are dying downtown, their bodies shriveled away to almost nothing. The

police are mystified and outrageous rumors are flying. Fifteen year-old Francy Macmillan

listens, but says nothing. It isn’t a comfort knowing that no matter how far-fetched the

theories, the truth is even stranger.

For Francy, the truth wasn’t very hard to find. It followed her home from

basketball practice one night, a floating bauble of light that speaks inside her mind and

shares her thoughts and her feelings. Is it an alien wanderer fallen from some distant star?

Or a shard of some divine entity? Whatever it is, Spark seems to like her.

But as their friendship grows, a disturbing fact emerges: Spark knows who is

responsible for those deaths. With Spark’s help, it is up to Francy to stop them. Spark

leads Francy into a strange alternate reality, along with her friends: beautiful Echo with

the dragon tattoo; moody Brooke with the wicked jaw; and Owen Owens, the boy with

the fascinating eyes who may just get around to kissing her one of these days—assuming

the world doesn’t end first.

EXCERPT
Snap! The air cracked like a cap pistol. Something bright flew across the room.

I wheeled around with my hand still full of hair.

“What the…”

It flared orange then red—a bright floating fleck of light. I watched it swirl,

slowly stirring the air, rising like an ember from a campfire.

Fire!

I dropped my hairbrush. My hair was on fire! I grabbed my head with both hands,

pawing through my hair. “No, no, no!”

But I couldn’t feel anything burning. Everything was normal. I checked in the

mirror. Nope. Not on fire. Not even a little.

I turned around again. The fleck hovered at eye-level now. It wasn’t orange any

more. It was blue. I leaned in a little closer. It blinked white, then blue again.

“Okay, this is…”

But really, I couldn’t think of a word that fit. I circled it in slow, careful steps.

It stayed still, dangling in the air. I reached out a finger. The fleck flashed silver and

spiraled upward, before settling at eye level again. Reflected in the dresser mirror, a

second fleck performed the same maneuver.

“What are you?” My voice quavered a little. I wasn’t scared exactly, but I could

feel my heart beating pretty fast. I leaned in closer. “What were you doing in my hair?”

It made a tight vertical loop, pulsing green, blue, and then green again.

“Why are you doing that?” I kept asking it questions like I thought it could

answer. I guess I was really talking to myself. I pushed my lips out and blew, just gently.

The fleck flickered in the tiny draft, but it didn’t blow away. If anything, it drew a little

closer. I had the sudden impulse to run downstairs and get a jar from the kitchen and see

if I could catch it, but I didn’t do that. Instead, I put my hand out. The fleck danced in

until it was barely an inch above my open palm. I braced myself and watched it settle into

my hand. It was cool and tiny on my skin.

“Hey,” I whispered. “What are you?”

It glowed and I heard a sound, low and metallic. Bonk.

“Was that you?”

There was a chirp, and then a low warbling hoot like when you blow air over

the top of a bottle. None of these sounds came in through my ears. They were just there,

sounding inside my head.

Again, it went bonk. That seemed to be its favorite. A click, a whistle, a little

wooden pop. Far-off thunder rumbled. Quiet at first, it rose up inside me, getting bigger

and louder. The sound swooped up into a squeal then dropped even faster to a sub-woofer

grumble and faded to silence.

“Is this supposed to mean something?”

It made a soft chugging noise, like a little toy train. The whole time, the thing just

sat there glowing in my palm.

“I don’t think we’re getting anywhere.”

It rose into the air until it hung just a few inches from my nose. I stared. It glowed

blue, flashed silver, and then paled to dull violet.

“It’s okay,” I said, and this time I was totally talking to myself. “This isn’t really

happening. It’s a dream. I’m dreaming. A dream about a little fleck of light that floats

around, making strange noises…”

Then, it flared bright crimson and flew straight into my head.

[…]I was wearing a yellow sundress and clutching the handle of my guitar case. Eagan offered to carry it for me, but I shook my head, for he was already bearing the weight of his huge backpack.

A part of me was glad he hadn’t been able to hear me play. The piece I had chosen was an acoustic cover of one of my favorite rock songs. The acoustic version was utterly sentimental; it expressed perfectly the way I felt about Eagan. After my performance, all my professors and fellow students admitted that they’d never heard me play with so much feeling. I wasn’t certain I wanted Eagan to discover that part of my soul yet.

We embraced awkwardly. I noticed that his eyes were red and tired. I also remarked that he was tanned and that he smelled good, as always. Of course, I didn’t reveal my sentiments.

It was a bright summer day. We went to a park, we sat, we didn’t talk much. After a while, Eagan lay back and fell asleep.

I watched him rest for a few moments, then I reclined alongside him. I placed my body very close to his, so that I could feel his heat through the thin cotton of my dress. His handsome face was turned toward me and his lips were slightly parted. Flecks of gold dotted his beard stubble and his dark blond hair.

I braced one of my hands on his arm and the other one on his muscled chest, then I leaned toward his face, keeping my eyes open. I let my mouth linger over his and breathed his breath then, finally, I whispered a kiss across the side of his mouth, then I licked his upper lip. I waited. He didn’t stir. So I closed my eyes and brushed his lips with mine once more. I became greedy. My tongue pressed between his parted lips and stroked his tongue once, twice and then again until I moaned and an unbearable ache surged between my legs.

My fingers gripped his sweaty T-shirt. I kept kissing Eagan until he groaned softly in his sleep.

“I love you,” I murmured against his lips.

I moved away from him. I forced myself to stand, I grabbed my guitar case and I left.

On the bus, I kept licking my lips; I tasted him, the salt of his sweat, and a hint of cinnamon.

The Syrian Virgin by Zack Love “My Review”

1b

Book Description

November 6, 2014

AUTHOR BIO:

Zack Love graduated from Harvard College, where he studied mostly literature, psychology, philosophy, and film. After college, he moved to New York City and took a corporate consulting job that had absolutely nothing to do with his studies. The attacks of September 11, 2001 inspired him to write a novelette titled “The Doorman,” and heightened his interest in the Middle East.
